Video Surveillance Cameras Inside Movie Theaters

Just watched Wolverine at a local westside theatre . While watching the film I noticed something that wasn’t there before: a little black box with a tiny red LED that panned the movie theatre. It was a low light video surveilance system put in place by an unmarked data mining company. It could be argued that the footage they take of you while you are watching the film is only to make sure no one is stealing the film.

Could it be possible however that they are watching to see if you laugh, smile or cry during the film? Are they are looking to see what race, age and ethnicity you are and monitoring your emotional reactions to the film for their ” research “? The technology is now there too for facial recognition to database your face and see how often you come back and to what films. Can the government or other agencies use this data to monitor your viewing habits and preferences?

I asked the automatons working the theater if they knew anything about the cameras. They stared back at me blankly and pointed to a manager who knew even less. “No sir, our cameras are outside in the parking lot” the manager said. I then asked ” How many of these films here are in Stereo ?” He starred at me confused and unloaded a well rehearsed reply: ” I can have you call customer service sir” .

Theaters are troubled enough. I wonder if people knew that they are being watched during their favorite movies, how they would react?

It will be curious when this news gets out. For now they are majorly keeping it quiet.
