Intention

Intention is critical to outcome.

Charles Grobb, M.D.

The late author Carlos Castaneda said that it was Don Juan’s goal to make him into a “man of knowledge. “According to Don Juan, a man of knowledge is one of “unbending intent.”

A person on the Path of Power without intention is like a boat without a rudder. Using the power of intention to manifest your will is a quality of The Darkness. Intention without action is futile. Intention, when mixed with discipline and action, is power and it leads to the manifestation of your desires.

Intention is not everything, but it is critical to the outcome. A great lesson from Ehekateotl and the Aztec people is that whether you are conscious of it or not, every action one takes carries with it an intention. This intention can be either deliberate or non-deliberate. If you don’t choose in life, your deciding will be done for you. For this very reason it is critical to act at every opportunity with intention. In every area of life, ask yourself what your intention is.

In this moment right now, why are you reading this book? What do you hope to learn? What is your intention? When you leave your house to start your day, what is your intention? When you go to see a friend, what is your intention? When you go to work, what is your intention? Write it down in your journal and take special care to monitor your intentions for the next nine days. Become aware. What you find may surprise you. When you begin to think in this way, the world takes on a different meaning. Most people never ask. By asking the question, “What is my intention” you begin to find meaning in your actions.

Living a life of intention takes practice; it builds one step after another. The medicine men and women of indigenous cultures offer a great lesson: they believe that by doing even the smallest tasks with intention, such as bathing, dressing, eating, and life’s routine, it will give them the power to take on bigger tasks and challenges with intention. They also believe that intention is a focus on rituals and living a sacred life, which leads to clear decision-making and results. This clarity of mind will give you one direction at a time to follow, allowing you to see that there is a specific purpose for every action you intend to take. With intention, nothing is arbitrary; you must look for the signs and follow their direction.

When you live your life with intention, you are living a deliberate and directed life. Nothing can stop you. With clear, unbending intent, you gain mastery over your life.

Squirrel-Proof”

There is a story about a man and a squirrel. This man had a number of bird feeders hanging from posts and trees in his yard. He carefully made sure they were always full because he enjoyed watching all the different birds fill his yard. One day, he noticed that the feeders were all nearly empty. How could that be? He had just filled them the day before. He then saw a squirrel making his way to one feeder hung from a post. The squirrel shimmied up the pole, making a final little leap onto the feeder. After it stopped swinging wildly, he began to munch hungrily on the remaining seeds. The man was angry. Those seeds were for the birds, not squirrels. He ran out to the yard and scared the squirrel off. Seething, he decided he needed to do something about the situation.

He went to his local hardware store to buy new feeders ones that were squirrel-proof. He found an employee asked him, ‘Do you have any squirrel-proof bird feeders?”

The man who worked there gave him a quizzical look then said, “Sure, right this way,” and led the man to a section of bird feeders. He picked up one of the feeders and said, “Here you are. This should do the trick.”

The man happily bought a new collection of bird feeder. When he got home, he took down the old feeders and replaced them with the new ones. He filled them up and soon the birds were twittering around, eating the fresh seeds. This went for a few more days until the man noticed that once again the seed was being depleted more quickly than was normal. He stood outside assessing the situation, a squirrel scamper across the grass, shimmied up the post, and made it into to the new squirrel-proof feeder where he contentedly munched the birdseed. This time the man was furious. That guy at the hardware store told him that these feeders were squirrel-pro

After he angrily chased off the squirrel, he took down all the feeders and headed back to the store.

When he arrived, he looked for the employee who led him astray. He found him in the lighting section. In an angry huff the man approached him. “Hey, you told me these feeders we squirrel-proof! It turns out that they’re not! I caught a squirl feasting away in one just a little while ago!”

“Sir, you’re right. I did tell you they were squirrel-proof. The fact is there is no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder.”

“Huh? What are you talking about? You yourself said “Sir,” the employee interrupted. “How much time do you spend thinking about preventing squirrels from getting inyour feeders?”

“Well, I didn’t think about it too much until I saw that they could raid them. Then I spent an hour or two thinking of ways to keep them out.”

“An hour or two?”

The man nodded.

“Sir, how long do you think squirrels think about how to get into the feeders?”

The man shrugged.

And the employee replied, “Their whole lives.”

Cultivate intention in every thought, word, and action. Through intention you become fierce and unstoppable.

Our intention creates our reality.
